Healthy Happenings: Natural Remedies for Insomnia

This year, I hope all of you are surviving and thriving.  Who would have thought we could make it this far? However, many of us are still affected by higher food and gas prices, as well as uncertainty when it comes to jobs. It is no wonder that so many of us have trouble sleeping. When we incorporate some natural relaxation habits and try hard to clean up our diets, we should at least sleep a little more each night without pharmaceutical medications.

Dietary Recommendations:

  1. Maintain a healthy blood sugar- Stop carbohydrate and sugar consumption before going to bed.
  2. Eat some quality protein and fats before bed to prevent low sugar spikes in the middle of the night.  Tryptophan is contained in turkey, chicken and tuna to help you sleep.
  3. Do not consume caffeine after noon-  I have found the chicory root  (coffee alternative) satisfies me. Teeccino has helped many customers reduce or eliminate their caffeine intake.  And they are very satisfying in the evening.   Herbal or decaffeinated teas can be helpful.

*** Therapeutic Uses of Chicory: Gallbladder inflammation, indigestion, lack of appetite, and liver problems to name a few.
  4. Stop drinking alcohol at least 2 hours before bed.

  • Supplements :
    1. Magnesium is a super supplement that is used to calm the nervous system, muscles, and even can help you sleep. Magnesium is difficult to absorb and can sometimes cause loose stools.  I prefer magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate. Taking 400 to 500 mg at bedtime can help you relax and sleep naturally.
    2. Melatonin 1-3 mg taken 30 minutes before bed helps promote sleep.  Do not take long term.
    3. Passion flower before bed can help you relax and fall asleep and does not cause drowsiness the next day.
    4. Valerian Root increases your brain’s GABA level to induce sedation.
    5. Vitamin B12 (in the form of Methylcobalamin) supports cellular function that assists with circadian rhythms.
    6. CBD products have helped many of our customers
  • Essential Oils :
  1. Lavender oil : You can diffuse lavender oil in a diffuser by the bed or rub a few drops of the oil on your neck before bed.
  2. Chamomile, whether in tea, tincture or essential oil (which is very expensive).  Chamomile is one of the best herbs for fighting stress and promoting relaxation.

Recipe: Honey Garlic  Chicken and Asparagus

1/4 cup local honey

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1/4 cup of flour( I use spelt flour)

1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar

2 Tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil

1 pound asparagus

1 teaspoon butter

Two cloves garlic, minced

1.Place flour in a bowl. Season chicken with salt and pepper, press both sides into the flour and shake off excess.

2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the chicken and cook for three minutes. Flip and cook another three minutes. Push chicken to the sides. Reduce heat to medium melt butter in the middle of the pan and then add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add the honey, soy sauce, and vinegar then stir. Bring to a simmer for one to two minutes until thick. Remove the chicken and the sauce from the heat onto a plate and a small bowl.

3.Add the asparagus to the pen, tops, add 1/3 cup filtered water. Cover and let steam until tender crisp. May need five or six minutes.
