Healthy Happenings:

I just completed the 4 week diet from Sugar Detox by Brooke Alpert, MS, RD, CDN.

I learned a lot about how much sugar is in everyday foods like fresh salsa, who knew?

It was difficult at first because you could not even have milk, yogurt or an apple because of the sugar content.  It made me appreciate my crispy nuts and raw seeds even more. I have to admit I am feeling better and plan to follow the program most of the time for the rest of my life.  I will, however, need to plan ahead for parties etc.  I plan to bring my own low sugar cookies and nuts to family gatherings.  I have started to make lower sugar cookies for purchase at the store made with xylitol and Rapadura with extra dark chocolate chips.

Food Pyramid

Dr. Michael R. Lyons M.D. and Dr. Michael Murray N.D created this pyramid in 2003 to help patients dealing with chronic illnesses including diabetes.  I have referred many customers to this type of diet.

  • * High quality multi-vitamin at least twice a day.
  • * Vitamin D3; Blood testing for 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels will give your physician an ideal of your dosage levels.  I take 5,000 IU vitamin D3 daily with fat for better absorption.
  • * B complex 50mg 1-2 per day.
  • * Magnesium 400-800mg at bedtime.  If you have loose stools Magnesium Glycinate is a formula that does not have that side effect.
  • * Zinc 30-50 mg daily
  • * Chromium Picolinate 200-400 mcg daily.  Customers usually take Chromate which is niacin bound to enhance absorption.
  • * Alpha Lipoic Acid is an antioxidant used to minimize neuropathy when taken 300-600 mg daily.
  • * Vitamin C 1000-3,000mg daily as an antioxidant is required in immune functions and the manufacture of collagen.

Herbal Supplements:

  • * Fiber supplements have been shown to enhance blood sugar control, decrease insulin levels, and reduce number of calories absorbed by the body.  Freshly ground flax seeds 1-2 tablespoons daily.
  • * Green coffee bean has been shown to increase metabolism and reduce to storage of fat.
  • * Mulberry leaf has been shown to improve diabetic control and decrease blood lipids and antioxidant properties.
  • * Gymnema Sylvestre appears to work in type 2 diabetes by enhancing the action of insulin.
  • * Onion and Garlic appear to have significant blood-sugar-lowering actions.

Exercise and Diabetes:

Exercise is absolutely essential in the prevention and management of diabetes.

  • * Aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, aerobic dance classes, cycling and swimming produce a rise in the heart and respiratory rates. Aim for 20-40 minutes daily.
  • * Strength training should take place two to three times per week and should consist of light to moderate weights.
  • * Stretching exercises should be done daily.  Beginning yoga is a great way to start.

As always, contact your pharmacist regarding any potential vitamin/drug interactions.  Notify physician regarding any alternative remedies.
